| Mr Khan said: no. Decriminalize, but don't legalize. The difference involves punishing the sex workers themselves. They should not be treated as criminals, because making them criminals makes them vulnerable to exploitation, because listening to their pimps or handlers is the only way to keep them out of jail. Legalizing, however, just normalizes it, and creates demand for more people to be pressured into the life. If there's a demand for prostitution, prostitution will be had, whether you need to groom vulnerable runaway children (which is where the slaves come from in first-world countries, usually), or smuggle in more people from abroad. Punish the john (yes. Because without their money, there'd be no need for the trafficking and exploitation), and punish the pimp. Don't punish the prostitute, but don't encourage it, either. |
the public scrutinity of legalization will do more to address those issues than anything else and is the best reason to legalize it. also most countries that legalize prostitution also put in place strong laws to make pimping illegal to ensure that kind of explotation doesn't exist.
