Someone caring about or discussing one thing doesn't invalidate their interest in everything else. There's hardly a lack of threads discussing other stuff (in-fact at the time of me posting this every thread on the front page was about something else).
Anyway, gamers have always discussed stuff like this. I'd actually argue that things are considerably tamer now than they were during the 3rd, 4th, and 5th gens. Such discussions are just more readily available.
