You're not alone, so far I have found the gun useless for the most part. I don't use it except to shoot dogs down. 

I use a 2H sword alot, but I do use my gun for parries when i am 1H mode. Certain enemies are much easier to parry (like the dudes with the lanterns outside of the cathedral)
