You're still early to upgrade you're weapon past +1. Kill the first boss if you haven't and head into the sewers until you find the elevator by the bridge. that leads right to the 2nd boss and the shortcut is the elevator by the 2 brick trolls where the 2nd lamp checkpoint is.
