Half the people tuning into the show did so because he was not only an ass, but a funny one that people enjoyed.
The people who kick up a fuss over the jokes he makes are neither people who watch top gear or have a sense of humor. These people seek out things to be offended by and their outrage made no difference to the Top Gear viewership, other than to possibly increase it.
Yes, he went to far this time, but he turned himself in and the guy he hit wanted to work it out so it could have been worked out amicably.
And while it is certainly a PR nightmare, that has only arisen as a result of fan outcry over Jeremy Clarkson being sacked.
He will move on to bigger and better things, the BBC will not.
