While it isn't 100%, Steam has taken a lot of this "hassle" out of the picture. It's not like consoles are without their required updates, patches or issues either. One consolation I have with PC that I don't have with consoles is that if something doesn't work I can likely fix it. On a console if something doesn't work you have to wait for a patch or send your specific console to the manufacturer for repairs. Installing a GPU driver is quite simple these days. You have your driver client alert you that an update is available. You click on that update. It downloads, installs, and restarts.
Consoles and PC's are slowly merging into one spectrum of platforms. You'll have closed systems (probably Nintendo at the extreme) on one end of the spectrum, and fully open systems on the other (what we currently call PC's.) Everywhere in between you'll have varying levels of access and manipulation. The current hardware manufacturers are preparing for this by creating streaming services and unified architectures/OS and PC hardware manufacturers are going the opposite way, introducing increasingly more closed platforms than a full-blown PC (steam, steamboxes, origin, etc, etc.)
It is really easy to download your PC game, install it, and start playing these days, with no hassle.
