They are indie because of their nature. Large budget fps's make sense because theres an expectation for expensive things like story, online and so on. On platformers that not the case.... devs can use a couple of speech bubbles, piss poor sound effects, 2d graphics and still please the crowd as long as the controls are ok (e.g. guacamelee).
To achieve an entertaining level of gameplay in an fps REQUIRES a large budget.
Ironically, its the 'poor sales' of most AAA platformers that is the reason they dont get 'greenlit' anymore.
