The 8th generation consoles(PS4 & X1) are NOT backwards compatible with the 7th generation's software.
There were HUNDREDS of games released on the 7th generation of consoles and many of these games are good games.
It would be quite inconvenient to have to keep the old console around just to play the old games.
Therefore, these remasters/ports simply open up opportunities for us to play the old games on our new consoles. In fact, I hope all 7th generation software gets the remaster treatment or simply get ported over to the 8th gen in order to have all games I would like to play available to me buy on my console of choice.
