It wasn't dieing during the SNES generation in fact there was growth. More consoles were sold and a ton of games were sold during that era. Nintendo lost Market share that gen but Sega made its real name then as well.

Sony energized the european countries to console gaming and capitilized on Segas work(sega started to grow in europe as well). With great marketing and by moving forward with the initial CD32 project that nintendo contracted them for.

The market was dead by the time the NES entered fray so much so that in order for them to sell it in the US they had to create Robot to market it as a toy because stores did not want to sell gaming sysems.
