For me:

PS1 and N64 were consoles which provided unique experiences. They had advantages in different genres. PS1 had more games though. (Age I was: 1-6)

PS2, and GC was a similar picture, but exclusives started to become less notable that generation, giving PS2 less of an advantage in third party games. I mostly gamed on PS2 anyway. (Age I was: 7-12)

360/PS3 and Wii, I had a gaming PC - 360 had a handful of exclusives I was interested in, PS3 had a dozen, Wii had probably twice the amount the other platforms had. I played all of the multiplats on PC. (Age I was: 13-18)

Xbone vs. PS4 vs. Wii U, this generation of consoles fail to differentiate themselves from PC even more. The PS4 has one interesting exclusive, while both consoles have some interesting console multiplats (for now.) I will not buy an Xbone, and will buy a PS4 at the end of this generation. I still have yet to buy a Wii U, but I know I have at least 5-10 exclusives I'm really interested in, and probably a few more I'll pick up and play. (Age I was/am 19,20,21 - indefinite)

So, different people have different tastes. I feel as if I get to experience the good of everything. The pretty fun multiplats that third parties needed the edge of hardware to produce, and Nintendo games which Nintendo focused resources are perfecting level-design and polish through a consistent, but moderate budget.
