I wasn't calling the WiiU a 7th gen system, just its IQ standards. As you said, generations are defined by release order, not power.
I do personally consider the WiiU's hardware deserving of the "8th gen" title though (even if only just). Raw power wise it may be closer to the PS3 and 360 than the X1 (and more so the PS4), but it's still capable of utilizing many modern features than the PS3 and 360 lack.
