To be fair its the same thing.  Making a shit ton of money means they can spend on the dedicated stuff.

That shit ton of money will end up being poured into a black hole if branching out into mobile ends up cheapening the ip and having the opposite effect to what is intended - which is what some fans fear. I think what many people haven't realised is that Nintendo are very much aware of this and are doing this slowly and cautiously. Apparently they're going to release  'at least one game this year', so we're looking at a similar release rate to what's happening on the Wii U. I wouldn't expect domination of the mobile markets just yet.

This is going to be a slow and careful approach.

Thats the beauty of it though.  One good app can make stupid amounts of money.  Then it dies fast.  So one or two a year is a good idea.

That's if the app takes off. These are new types of games, using existing ip.

Iwata: "The fact is, however, it is a highly competitive market and only a handful of content providers have been able to show enduring results. If Nintendo cannot make it to that handful of winners, it does not make sense for us to be engaged in the software business on smart devices." http://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/release/en/2015/150317/02.html

This isn't the no-brainer that everybody thinks it is. They have what it takes to get it right and boost the dedicated console division as a result, and I'm excited about that, don't get me wrong, especially now they're partnered with DeNA. But whether that will work is another question.

I think it's quite reasonable for some fans to be fearful.
