Their goal here isn't to sell more Wii Us and 3DS from this, it is to make them a shit ton of money, which it will.

Iwata:

"Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices but it is not because we have lost passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems. On the contrary, now that we have decided how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than ever before. Nintendo has made this decision because we have concluded that the approach of making use of smart devices is a rational way for us to encourage even more people around the world to recognize the great value of the wonderful game software available on our dedicated game systems." http://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/release/en/2015/150317/03.html

That says to me they're using the mobile strategy to boost the console hardware and software.

To be fair its the same thing.  Making a shit ton of money means they can spend on the dedicated stuff.

That shit ton of money will end up being poured into a black hole if branching out into mobile ends up cheapening the ip and having the opposite effect to what is intended - which is what some fans fear. I think what many people haven't realised is that Nintendo are very much aware of this and are doing this slowly and cautiously. Apparently they're going to release  'at least one game this year', so we're looking at a similar release rate to what's happening on the Wii U. I wouldn't expect domination of the mobile markets just yet.

This is going to be a slow and careful approach.
