If I make the best game of all time, like literally digital crack-cocaine, and I release it on xbox1 and PC, I will not sell 2x the amount of copies.
I will sell 1x the amount it would have sold if I had made it xb1 exclusive and pc owners BOUGHT an xb1 to play it.
You understand?
This is the entire basis of exclusivity. It is a benefit, not a shackle. Exclusivity gets consumers to buy more from you. I've bought several multiplatform games on ps4, which sony profits 15$ on each sale. I have not bought them from MS because I don't have an xbox. I have a ps4 because of the exclusives I wanted to play: infamous, silent hills, killzone.
I only have a certain maount of time to game.
PS4 provides enough quality gameplay to satiate that spare time.
In order to maximize my efficiency, I will not buy an xb1, because that is 400$ I could instead be spending on games (which sony then profits on)
It's like hulu or netflix.
If a hulu member is watching an exclusive show on netflix, that is commercial time that hulu is not benefitting from. Therefore, both hulu and netflix create their own exclusive shows and movies, in order to create more sales. Right now, hulu has all the newest anime. Crunchyroll has the most but not the newest. Hulu makes deals to get the newest seasons in order to get consumers to purchase hulu instead of crunchyroll.
Exclusivity is going nowhere. period.
