Didn't say they were all historical landmarks, but in Stowe's case, they require you to give it somewhat of an apperance of age/fit in with the architectural design of the surrounding buildings/businesses.

LOL. Naaa, the villages I walk through (and the one I lived in for a while) don't have things like McDonalds. They have subtle indications like Sky satalite dishes or double glazing.

Yeah, the only places like that in Vermont are probably the Shelburne Museum, which is entirely old structures...but it's for preservation, so there's a reason for that.  I would imagine much of the US doesn't have such locales, for the obvious reason that the US simply isn't that old.  Definitely something I enjoyed when I visited Europe, way back when, though.
