They won't because they want EU membership and the country largely does not.

Good, EU membership is what is best for the country.

That is your opinion, and considering that democracy is what's best for the country don't you think people should have the final say on such an important issue?

Decades ago people were able to vote on joining the EU when they though it was simply a free trade deal, why should the people of today not be allowed to vote.
