The truth is Sonic and Mario were never equals. Mario was always more popular and succesful.
Mario Kart alone is on track to outsell the entire Sonic franchise.
Mario has great 2D platformers, 3D platformers, kart racers, party games, sport games, etc.

Looking at the first games of both series (Sonic The Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros.) Sonic is the better game.
Sonic had so much potential. Better gameplay, better levels, better protagonist...
The only problem is that Sega did after the first Sonic games too much wrong.

Mario's first game is much older lol... It's also much more classic than Sonic's first game. And sold a lot more.
