The rule of thumb for writing, which I almost always follow, is that the full name should be spelled out somewhere BEFORE using an abbreviation. For example:

"I think the best example of this is God of War. GoW really changed the landscape when it came to angry protagonists."

Establish clearly what you're talking about at the beginning and there will be less possibility for confusion.
