I liked this definition, until I thought about kickstarter. How does that fit in?

Kickstarter is crowdfunding. In almost all cases, it is used to supplement -- not replace -- the team's financial contribution. So, it's an indie game with crowdfunding support, or perhaps simply a "crowdfunded" game if the raised funds make up a majority of its budget.
