Maybe we do remember and are happy that most developers don't feel the need anymore to build arbitrary barriers.


Difficulty was the norm back then mostly due to the fact the games were pretty shallow and short. So, the developers made them hard intentionally to create the artifical sense of longevity. 

Hard games are NOT the norm today.

Yup easy games are the norm, and guess what?  They're boring.  You may as well just watch a movie.  The rush when you finally defeat a challenge is what keeps me coming back, not mindless button mashing a baby could pull off
