What makes you think FFXIII wouldn't have been the same if Sakaguchi had stayed ? He's not some god that can turn trash into gold. What's he gonna be able to do when his former peers have turned sour and more importantly when he himself is sour ? The vast majority of his later career at Square was spent as producer, not as a developer so hardly did he ever help with the designs, programming, or anything anymore ... |
He was executive producer though, if there was something he didn't like, he would have thrown it out. Developers just make the game, if the controls were unresponsive or it looked like crap we can blame the developers. Unfortunately everything was on point and the only crappy thing about XIII would come down to an executive decision on where the direction of the game was going. Decisions like taking out the cities and shops to streamline the story, ect. It is exactly the person in Sakaguchi's chair that screwed up XIII.
