Nintendo, comparably, did the opposite. It was huge out the gate, but the company didn't do enough to keep their audience and then the Wii U came out and didn't deliver the experiences/technology that the dwindling Wii users wanted. Even though it was the best selling console of it's generation, Wii's annual sales were well below X360 and PS3 the last few years showing the interest/brand-loyalty was fading. I think this is a good thing. Blind brand-loyalty doesn't keep the companies competitive. If a company can do so many things to regain the trust of the consumer, they deserver all the positivity they can get. I say this not as a fan of companies, but because I enjoy gaming and technology. |
I think the difference between the Wii and the PS3 was that the Wii saw success at the start, which Nintendo and other companies worked to provide as much as they could with the Wii until they eventually exhausted it, while the PS3 took awhile to get its momentum. The Wii slowing down was just a natural progression of doing as much as they could with the console until they used up all their ideas. PS3's biggest strides looked to be towards the end of its life cycle.
I still can't give the PS4 a lot of praise for essentially doing the most standard and safest thing this generation. Now if they did something like the Wii, I would give them props. I do give my props for Nintendo for trying something new again, even if it didn't work out for them.
