It definitely should have been Gen 5 > Gen 4 > Gen 3 > Gen 6 > Gen7 > Gen 2 > Gen 1
Gen 1 and 2 started things off but it wasn't until 3 when things really took off (thanks to Nintendo and Sega). Gen 4 really mastered the 2D graphics and 5 brought everything into 3D. Gen 6 and up is just a polishing/graphics update of everything that was started in Gen 4 and 5. Thankfully Nintendo is still trying to innovate the way we play and interact with games, as they always have, but Sony and Microsoft are happy with just updating graphics.
