I only tried Redhat I believe (it was four or five years ago) but I just really hated it. First getting installed on my laptop was Hell but then it just couldn't do anything nearly as well as I could do on Windows without adding 10 extra steps and still not always be as good as whatever I would use on Windows.

The user friendliness of Linux has come a long long way in 5 years, especially when it comes to laptops. 5 years ago, linux was still just getting used to being a viable desktop option, so they were not even bothering with Laptop specific problems (drivers). Now all that has changed in the mainstream linux distributions. Try the Ubuntu Live CD, preferably after the 22nd when 8.04 is released and you will see just how much Linux has evolved.
