I guess I dont know then.. If you are not talking about cut-scenes. I am not sure if the term pre-rendered should be used in context with environments.

The backgrounds and environments of games are shown and drawn in real time unless it is a 2-D backdrop picture in the background.

Usually you will see 3D environments that a user can walk through and interact with in some way.. but very far in the background can sometimes have a "pre-rendered picture" But that background picture is still being shown in the game at a real time, it just always remains as a background and cannot be interacted with.


The whole context throws me off though.. since usually a pre-rendered environment is referred to through a video or "cut-scene" and even the "2-D background maps" are being presented in a real-time environment which are done by the in-game engines, thus negating the pre-rendered connotation.
