A smear campaign implies that reviewers were wilfully trying to trash The Order without any basis in reality. That's not exactly what happened, the flaws pointed out in the previews of The Order are truly present in the game and for some reviewers that was enough to drop the score down.

An example of smearing a game would be people who say The Last of Us is nothing but an interactive movie. That's simply not true.

ok but they said the same thing about the Order and yet I remember an awful lot of long gameplay sequences in it.
