The only gf you ever need to actually summon is doomtrain, and you don't even need that one if you don't want as long as you have meltdown. I do agree though, 8 is shit and if it weren't for 13 would be my least favorite final fantasy. The junction system is broken and the story is maudlin and has one of the all time worst plot twists not just in video games, but in the history of story telling.
