That was something I read way back when as well. I think in the case of Xbox vs Playstation MS might have been right to not call it Xbox 2. Their problem was they used one generation thinking when coming up with 360. A better numbering format, could have been to use the year number of release. Xbox 2k5 or Xbox 05. Of course then they would have had to think very carefully about what year to release the current Xbox because people would be really put off buying Xbox 2k13 or Xbox 13. But they could have called it Xbox 14 because 2014 was the first full year of release. With that numbering format theyr are good for the rest of the century. and they will always have a higher number than the corresponding PS console.
So if Nintendo had gone with NES 2000 instead of Wii U, Nintendo would be winning in the USA.
