I think it's a mix of naivity and a lack of exposure to the vast wealth of video games that are out there across all of the platforms. But it's very common that the games attributed with introducing revolutionary concepts, have actually borrowed them from lesser known games. Innovation and Popularisation are very different.
However, I will admit for Metroid Prime, it was the first real time action game I played where the story/narration was done through examining your environment. Damn I love that game!
