I would argue that the Wii U is a mix of those two systems. If it were a GameCube 2 so to speak it would have been on par with X1, had a traditional controller and had solid third party support.
Nintendo wanted both markets and is struggling in both. I do agree though it would have served them better (in retrospect) to try and have lower prices Wii HD for $200 day one.
