This is why story driven games are becoming more in demand. Gameplay-wise there is nothing new under the sun, or very litte left by way of true innovation. So how do you introduce freshnessa and variety into games? Tell a compelling story. A compelling story won't mask crap gameplay design, but it will lead to acceptance of derivative but well crafted gameplay. Perhaps VR / AR(Hololens) will bring about a new wave of genuine innovation in gameplay, but I doubt either will achieve the sort of market penetration in the gaming area to really act as a platform for AAA game progression.
