The fact you're constantly facing death gives you a reason to explore for secrets, use your items at best, find beast strategy to stay alive. It's a bit like limited resources in survival games, when you have infinite bullets in a Resident Evil game it's not a survival anymore, it's an action game.
Lowering the difficulty bar in DS would just cripple it.
