I don't think that's a fair statement. What RaD seemed to have been mistaken with is that the market for their vision of this game is small and their vision seemingly does not align with the tases of many critics. Though to date more than half of the critics have given the game >/= 7/10 which means most critics think the game is pretty good.

Indeed. Review scores aside, many of the reviewers look forward to a sequel.

And that's the catch 22. They like aspects of it well enough to think there is a great game potentially in there and want to see a sequel. But the reviews this game is getting will probably ensure this world never sees the light of day again.

Reading Jim Sterling's review, he almost seems to think a sequel is a foregone conclusion. He had plenty of complimentary things to say about the game but ultimately felt he could only give the game a 6.5. New IP that meta in the 60's rarely achieve adequate sales to justify investment in a sequel. So Jim's score, which I am not saying is unjustified, is working against his ambition for the, not yet and possibly never will be, franchise.
