I know some of you guys are in grad school and I dated too when I was a grad. I can strongly recommend okcupid (it's free). I met lot of willing girls who would date a "poor" grad student. You don't have to be extravagant but you can't be a cheap ass. Always buy on the first 5 dates.
I'll share some secrets:
Never do dinner as a first date. Always do coffee. It's inexpensive and it minimizes the distractions (like stuffing your face). Avoid going to the movies unless it's a filler date. Taking a walk in a park or somewhere romantic is an excellent way of holding hands and getting to know the girl better.
Never attempt a kiss on the first date unless the mood and ambiance is right. That's reserved for evening dates typically. Never shake her hand, always hug. Kiss on the cheek if you're feeling brave.
Bowling is another great activity. It allows for smooth physical contact. For example, high five the girl if she scores a strike. It really leaves a great impression of being together.
