lol he knew he was a c**t, he was a tormented man who became a monster blinded by rage, something a lot of us have can relate to. In the end even he was disgusted at the chaos he had wrought and saw fit to do the only decent thing he could, end his life.
He didn't do it to become a martyr, who exactly would he be a martyr to? Everyone still alive would've wanted him dead haha. His suicide was his final fuck you to Athena to deprive her the power to be the one true God and also because he felt his life wasn't worth living after his destructive quest for vengeance & atonement was complete, releasing hope to mankind was just a positive by-product of his final act of defiance/selfishness.
Kratos is my fav character as if it isn't obvious :P
