I remember a pool about this in USA that was posted here on VGC in 2013.
If i am not mistaken, Mario was 1st, Link 2nd and pikachu 3rd. Yea, i don't know how Link got over pikachu, people most likely answered "Zelda" and the researchers counted it anyway.
But anyway, Mario is always on top on pools like that.
