Think we have the winner.
I don't think a lot of people understand how the media works. There was a big case where a British Au pair, Louise Woodward in the US was on trial for the murder of the baby she was caring for.
That went on to become one of the biggest news stories in the UK that year. However, it was only news at all (beyond that city's local news network), because it was a very slow news day in the UK and there just happened to be a (UK) Channel 4 News reporter waiting in an airport where the local news network was covering the story. Had there already been enough content to fill their news slot, or had that particular network's journalist not been sat in a departure lounge where that news story happened to be running, it would never have made it onto our news at all.
The US is a huge country, the National News can't cover anywhere near as much as in other countries. If it's only on local news, it rarely becomes big anywhere other than where it happened.
I think it's reaching a bit to say that it doesn't get mainstream coverage because the victims were muslim. However I definitely agree, had the gunman been muslim, that would definitely have made the national news. Which is really sad for different reasons.
