They were doing pretty in 04-06 because of the iPod already though. Back around 1997 though, yeah it looked like they were completely finished. 

Bet Microsoft really is kicking themselves for not just buying them outright back then, lol. Hell, even Nintendo could've bought them outright back then. 

Microsoft bought part of Apple to keep them from going under so that they wouldn't be classed as having an OS monopoly and face being broken up.  If they had bought Apple they would have been broken up as a monopoly which would of defeated the purpose of buying Apple anyway.
