The game seems like it's built to make profit so commercial success is almost a sure thing. Then, with the second title they'll have more funds allotted for multiplayer, expanding the lore/universe and making a game in the same scope of Uncharted 2. It makes sense for Sony to pick them up but as others have pointed out... why didn't they do that with Insomniac?

Because I don't think Sony just buys up studios just for the sake of it. There's a discussion, agreement, and then an execution of the acquisiton. Of course, I'm not 100% positive, but I doubt they've ever acquired a studio that didn't want that.

Ted Price from Insomniac games addressed them not being 1st party a few years ago , his answer was we have been given the opportunity to be part of Sony on a number of occassions on very favourable terms.

we have a strong relationship with them and have a strong track record of producing IP's for Sony under contract that are now a big part of Sony's library. all this was achieved while remaining independent and this unique relationship allows us to continue to work with Sony has an almost a defacto 1st party but with the freedom to explore other avenues that comes with our independence .
