However, imo, they are still stupid and bring down an excellent benefit to a console over a pc game.

Umm, sorry, but I 100% disagree. one of the HUGE advantages of PC gaming over console gaming, is the ability to move your code to a far faster delivery system then an optical disk.

Only one console on the market today brings that advantage to it's users, and when companies take advantage of it they get bashed? How ridicules.

Its a mixed bag.

Console gaming has always had an appeal over PC gaming with its "plug n' play" convenience. People want to have a solid product that doesn't require such chore-like obstacles or steps beyond popping in the disc. While Mandatory Installs are fairly benign, inconveniences like HD space and the fact your save data is tied to them is a worrisome development.

Ultimately while beneficial in many regards, Game Data Installs (Mandatory or not) create a slippery slope for lazy developers in much the same way DLC has opened the gate for after-the-fact patches in lieu of poor testing or rushed game development. However, the advantages of DLC will never be made obsolete by new disc or media formats such as protein coated discs or ever advancing laser readers capable of reading pre-existing formats faster and faster. Game Data Installs are but a mere temporary convenience in this brief transition of technologies forced largely by the superficial step forward of Blu-Ray, not necessaraly a trend of the future.
