I think M$ as a company could not have pulled off what you were looking for them to do 12 years ago. It's only in the last 3 years that M$ has adopted a climate of "One Company". Should they have done something like what you are disucssing back then? Sure! But, with knowing everything we know today in our pocket, it's easy to say that. If you could have known (for sure) that smarphones and tablets would really take over the casual market as fast as it did, you would have made the plan that you discussed. Android/ios didn't do anything special to nurture that market besides being there. M$ had mobile OS's, but they were crappy and they were expensive. Who would have really known that broadband to the home and highspeed internet to phones would really develop so fast. |
Well think about, there was the smartphone 12 years ago, there would have been smart phone's but they would not have been based on windows CE and than pocket PC.
As for not being able to Nurture the market besides being there is I would say is not true at all, Android has been open source, that was built to work on many types of CPU's not just mainly x86 socked branded chips. Arm was a chip at the time was being developed to be the very main chips that go into pretty much every type of consumer electronic.
The main point of this is Microsoft concentrated on building the evolution of its OS for PC mainly, but the Evolution of general mass compute platform was smartphone increasing at a much faster rate. What Robbie Bach even touched on this very aspect of Windows was not really geared for these type of computing platforms like Touch imput
Mass general computer development. Which other designed OS's were.
Both Apple and Google and other's were. That's the very point I am bringing Up.
If Microsoft had a Game centric Loadable OS designed for embedded systems like pocket PC was when strong arm processor's were , when they went with creation of pocket PC moved to windows Mobile. I think they would have a much larger expansion footprint than just xbox being tied to a single core system, it kinda locks Xbox for so many years to that single design structure. As i said they are moving to the 1 eco system, but i still say it was a mistake locking xbox into the single platform and not gear xbox as an entertainment OS that works on every hardware as if it was already an xbox.
Android, and the SteamOS already is that way from the get go.
