I don't know how much of what I'm about to say has been said... so I'll just be out with it.
If they're using the game engine, then another game should be quicker to make than it's taking them to make FFXIII since the groundwork has already been laid. As somebody else said, there are going to be multiple games in the FFXIII universe (6 I believe) so they may just spend this generation making games in their new world.
