I can't be arsed to actually dig up Kent's Ultimate History book from my closet, but the Wikipedia article on the Dreamcast cites his book and states that the Dreamcast sold 8-900k systems in its first three months on the market in Japan. Unless it only sold 1-200k over the next seven months, the PS4 is WAY behind. (During those seven months, Shenmue and Soul Calibur were released as well.)

The Dreamcast sold 10.6 consoles world wide. The PS4 has beat that. The Dreamcast sold 2.32 million consoles in Japan during its entire lifespan (November 1998 through March 2001). The PS4 has sold over 1 million consoles in Japan through its first full year. There aren't a lot of awesome games out for the PS4, especially not games that fit the type of gameplay that the Japanese culture appears to enjoy. The number of PS4s sold in Japan will exceed 2.32 million through the life of the PS4. That can't be proven, but that's my bet. The Dreamcast isn't doing better than the PS4.
