I have the exact opposite happen to me. I loved VII, the characters and the story as well as the lore. When I played Crisis Core I couldn't even finish it, it felt boring and it lacked everything I liked about VII.
On topic: It always brings a smile to my face to see that more people have VIII as their favorite. I love it to death even if I acknowledge its flaws. I just wish XV is as good as it looks. I really disliked XII's gameplay, even if they are not going back to their roots, I just want another FF I can love like VIII and VII.
