For me it is Sakaguchi and Nobuo, they are masters in telling a story and making suitable songs for it. When I hear hear the songs of Final Fantasy IX I always get goosebumps especially if I remember the part in the game where the songs take place..... Final Fantasy XIII was empty for me, I did not care about the characters, the music did not pump me up like the older games did. Lost odyssey with Sakaguchi and Nobuo made me very happy because they worked again together and damned that game did everything what I enjoyed about the older FF games.

Most people who buy Final Fantasy today are people do it for nostalgic reasons and hope to feel that magic and quality again from the older FF games......

Sakaguchi had nothing to do with FFVIII and FFX stories. He was just producer on those games. The last FF game he directed was V actually, so I wouldn't say the "magic" or "essence" (whatever those are) came from Sakaguchi.

I do miss Uematsu though, even though I think XII and XIII soundtracks are amazing.
