It might not follow the same philosophy, but that doesn't mean they are bad at it; especially not when they're the designers themselves and there's tons of people who enjoy collecting achievements/trophies (me included). You're the one who's not digging it.

 

EDIT: For the record, there are achievements that reward the player in-game.

People like it because there's no better alternative. The Romans liked their wine even though the quality of it is shitty compared to today.
