The fire retardent Nintendo used in the SNES was made different. Over the years it rise to the sruface. Turning the palstic yellow and making it brittle. This is what caused the werid color problem on certain parts. Some stayed the normal grey. Others, yellowed to high heaven. Here's a picture of my friends SNES I was cleanign and doing repairs on. The main body plastic was really bad.
