metroid and kid icarus are not bad things to be known for as a software designer designer. plus i think where yokoi shines most is in coming up with intuitive ways of controlling games, so that design for him is inclusive both of software and hardware. the puzzle game gunpey is also an ingenious little game which in a better world would be at least as well known as dr. mario or tetris attack, if not tetris itself.

I was under the impression Yokoi acted as producer on Metroid and Kid Icarus, not as designer.

i'm not sure these roles were as formalized as they were later. yokoi had a hand in the design of the original metroid at least as much as sakamoto (who's credited as working on the art). in any case, when i came up with the names i was thinking both of game design in a vacuum (just coming up with the gameplay concept) and game design as inclusive of hardware.

dr. mario and gunpey are yokoi's complete designs, and those are also terrific.
