I was recently looking up on replacing a battery on an old Vaio laptop and read about how some replacement batteries from China flash updated the bios because Sony made it so only official Sony batteries would work and to get around this the unofficial batteries would update the bios when plugged in. I don't know how much truth there is to this or if I remember the details properly because I'm just going off what I read, but it might be worth asking a Dell technician if they have any ideas. Some of the boot problems you describe may point to an bios issue though.
