The Xbox one is a total success. Compare to their past effort this is Microsoft bestselling console and it's also profitable.
You're comparing the 18.5 million PS4 sold to 11 million Xbox One. There are a few markets that will never support Xbox one like Japan and some European countries. If we look at only the two largest market in the world - UK and NA. North America (NA) - PS4 - 7.48 million (52.3%) vs Xbox One - 6.81 million (47.66%) UK - PS4 - 1.81 million (55.52%) vs Xbox One - 1.45 million (44.48%) (Europe PS4 - 7.35 vs Xbox One 2.88)
UK and NA make ups: 9.29/18.5 = 50% of PS4 market 8.26/11 = 75% of Xbox One market We all know that the PS4 is a massive success worldwide and one of the bestselling console to date. But if you look at what the Xbox One has manage to do in the two biggest markets UK and NA. They achieve massive success of their own and if the trend continues they might even catch up to PS4 in these markets.
There no surprise that PS4 is outselling Xbox one in Japan, Germany, and France..... But don't let the PS4 success in these market take away how well the Xbox one has manage to do in NA and UK. Sony was never the underdog; they were the sales leader and screw up majorly with the PS3 initial release. The PS4 had a flawless release and I am actually surprise how well Microsoft Xbox One has performed considering all the mistakes that they made. The future for Xbox one is very bright and they should probably avoid spending too much marketing money on the Market dominated by PS4. |
Yes, compared to MS's previous consoles the XB1 is their best console ever. But it doesn't exist in a vaccuum. And the NA and UK markets don't exist in vaccuums either. What matters is WW numbers.
But that's what's so interesting with this discussion! On the one hand, it's selling very well compared to almost everything except PS4/2 and Wii. That's fantastic! On the other hand, it's getting beaten by it's most direct competition; PS4 - and by quite a bit. I'd argue it's a success if MS is making money from it.

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
